Burley are a company that make trailers for bicycles. These bike trailers are very popular amongst cycling families as you can carry one or two small children along with you on your cycling trip. There are numerous designs of Burleys and a lot of people first know of them if they have been to or met someone who has been on a Center Parcs Holiday, as Centre Parcs hire them out to their visitors as a great way for adults and children to commute together around their cycle only roadways and paths.
A typical Burley child bicycle trailer has 2 wheels and 1 or 2 seats for children up to the age of 6. The seats are housed in a weatherproof canvas cabin (some have a plastic base) with safety belts. A lightweight aluminium frame carries the cabin and an aluminium arm with a clever universal clamp, attaches to the adult bike. There is often space behind the child seats to carry an extra bag or two and reflectors and a tall flag are fitted externally for visibility. Lights are also available. Many other companies make far cheaper trailers but are they usually made of heavier steel and inferior materials. Burleys hold their value well and once the children have grown out of them, selling them on places such as eBay allows you to recoup much of the initial outlay if sold in good condition. |
